Before feeds: how independent rap sites moved music

Forums, MP3 links, interviews and email submissions formed a hand-built discovery network.

A homepage was a release channel

Before streaming dashboards and algorithmic feeds, regional sites connected artists, DJs, producers and listeners through a deliberately assembled front page. News items sat beside interview links, radio playlists, video files and downloadable tracks.

Distribution was social — just less centralized

Links moved through message boards, blogs, instant messages and email lists. A feature could be quoted in a forum in Germany, added to an artist biography and rediscovered years later through a dead URL.

What small sites did well

  • Covered scenes at neighborhood scale.
  • Published long conversations with emerging artists.
  • Connected local radio and mixtape circulation.
  • Kept producer and crew credits visible.

The tradeoff was fragility: hosting bills, broken players and undocumented ownership could erase years of work. Modern archives should preserve citations and permissions along with files.
